this is simply one of those instances where a spade is a spade. it's like a bully who doesn't like being called a bully. or a fat person who likes to be called big boned.

Sorry, but if you insist on having multiple tattoos in areas you can't easily cover up, expect to have a more difficult time finding jobs. Its just the nature of the beast, the beast being society. If you want to have tattoos, accept the reality of the situation or don't get them to start with.

When I was younger, I was the ONLY female in all of my major classes (computer science and engineering). I was a trailblazer and accepted that it would be harder for me - and it was. But I persevered.

However my gender was not a choice - like tattoos and piercings are. Race is not a choice. Ethnicity is not a choice. Religion is sort of a choice but mostly really not as the vast majority of people in the world follow the religion their parents imposed on them.

But getting tattoos and piercings IS a choice, and where they are or how visible they are is also a choice. If you want an office job, keep them under cover or don't get them to start with. If you do have visible tattoos and piercings, get over yourself. It is going to be harder to find a job outside of a tattoo parlor, betting establishment, pawnbroker, bail bondsman, payday loan place, strip joint, and other shady businesses.

A few years ago when I was still an active cyclist, we had a young woman come on one of the female cyclist forums I was on posting wanting to know what seat she should buy so she wouldn't have to remove her piercing (which was embedded in a very tender private place for a female). She was told there was no such seat that she could safely ride on with that thing still in. She was told that because it is true - even the seats with voids in them that are supposed to provide relief to tender bits are unsafe if you have a ring installed there, due to the likely chance that it will catch and tear if you shift or fall.

She got all up on her high horse because she thought we were being unfairly bigoted against piercings.

Might as well start calling your bicycle bigoted, LOL! It simply is not safe to ride a bike with that sort of hardware installed. You are going to get sore/hurt at best. Physics doesn't care about your "right to personal expression".
comparing bicycle seats to societal expectations ... that's a little dense, don't ya think?

I'm a female with 15 tattoos, but they can all be covered if necessary - I chose location and size carefully. The only ones that are difficult to cover are cancer ribbons on my wrists, for my parents. Anyone who has a problem with those can go scratch.

I worked for a Fortune 25 company that had all manner of modified people in NYHQ - it was never a problem. generally was mostly covered up at work but during warmer months, there were a few showing and no one ever said a peep. My boss was surprised the first time she saw them but it was fine. I think it's definitely a generational thing, as well as a geographic thing. Then again, none of my tattoos are offensive in anyway....most are small girly things.

To each his own. I love visual diversity, it makes life interesting. I'm a wimp...I haven't even gotten my ears peirced and honestly the idea scares me.

I'm sure she was aware she'd have trouble finding a professional job when she decided to get those tattoos. There's probably someone out there who would take a chance on her but she's got a hard road ahead finding him/her.

Does your office have a policy against visible tattoos, or just random management opinion?

Sure it is discrimination. You have to discriminate candidates when hiring. You just can't use the state/federally-protected classifications to be discriminatory about.
Tattoos is not one of the protected classifications. Neither is having unkempt or slovenly appearance.

That may have had nothing to do with the tattoos, and just be the dress code for managers.

OP...don't hire her. I hate tats and piercings.

I like my gals natural. If a gal has pierced nipples or pierced privates I would tell her to put her clothes back on...hate it.

I saw a gal at the pool that had a big dark blue ugly horse tattooed on her pillowy breasts. She was not a beauty, kinda short and fat. But her breasts were her best feature...until she ruined em. Who the hell wants to look at a big ugly blue horse on her breasts??

Women don't perfect their beauty with body mods they ruin it.

Of course, this is all relative. The punkers think an unmoded body is ugly.

[quote=orionstars;46455553]I would have hired her. Why punish her forever for choices she made in the past? So heartless.[/QUOTE

Not heartless at all. She made the choice to get the tattoo. Sometimes in life choices come with consequences. Not always, but it happens and when it does we have to accept them. Doesn't mean we like it or even agree that it's fair. It's called life. As for punishment I'd say her own personal choices are the root, cause of her "punishment". That's hardly the fault of the company.

If I owned a company that routinely dealt with clientele that were adverse to anyone with tattoos I wouldn't hire them. After all, I don't hire people that are going to cost me money,I hire people that are going to make me money.

yep, I have many piercings and they all came out at interview time. Also dyed my hair back to my natural color and got a haircut and wore a tie. If someone is the ambassador of the company most all want them to look mainstream.

People need reminded that they have to be tolerated not liked. Same when you are dating.
