I finally found some work near my new area. "Near" is almost an hour's drive over a state line, but I can't get this work locally. It's an occupation with busy and less busy times and two trainees, one of them me, were taken on during the less busy time so as to be ready for the supposed deluge. I have more experience than the other trainee, but not specific to the job. All fine, I don't mind the ebb and flow, don't mind learning something new.

The problem is that there are no set days or hours. It started out with being asked to come on such and such day, but the second trainee lives maybe 10 minutes away, so drops by almost daily and loves the work as much as I do. I can't drop in from an hour away on a whim and amuse myself or go home if there's nothing for me to do. So if the supervisor isn't available when I leave, I have to text and ask her to let me know when to come next and if she doesn't I have to text again and ask again.

I hate this arrangement. I don't feel really hired and I have never encountered such and don't really what's the best way to handle it.
