I started my first job out of high school at $1.35 an hour that year, and was able to save for community college (tuition as I recall was $250 for either a quarter or semester) only because I was still living at home with my folks and they were feeding me. There's no way I could have afforded to rent an apartment and save for community college on that wage.

My Mother was making $1.65 an hour back then. 40 hour weeks also. Married, buying a house and had 2 cars...Yeah, $300 was pretty damn good.
