Can you believe this? My company is having a going away party at a bar for a few employees who've been here for a long time and are leaving not by choice. The 'not by choice' part is something I heard through the grapevine. I got an invite for the party and assumed they had decided to move on.
When you say "my company" I suspect this is not some company-sponsored event where someone is going to bust out a corporate credit card to pay for everything. Sounds more like some co-workers are getting together to say good-bye to these people, which wouldn't be unheard of if they were being forced out.
If it was about downsizing - I've gone to parties in that situation.
If the company needs to downsize to stay afloat... as much as it stinks.. you can't take that personally.

You are making assumptions about overheard gossip, perhaps if you knew the facts a going away party at a bar by coworkers is not out of line.

In that situation, I'd take it as a personal insult on top of injury and I'd tell them where they can stick their party.

It is a company-sanctioned event. The invite was sent out by HR. It was the typical "We want to thank X and Y for all the work they've done over the years" Outlook invite and said the company will be paying for appetizers. It only became weird after I learned that their jobs were getting "moved" to a different (cheaper) state which is equivalent to getting layed off since no one would elect to make that move rather than quit. I also highly suspect that their jobs will not be backfilled in the other state, so the jobs are being de facto eliminated.
