OP,

So the guy that sells management theory for living (your professor), claims that management is be all and end all of employee/organization performance? You don't say!

Reality is, being a manager is no different than being a parent, or president for that matter. That is, you're given credit for, or blamed for, things that are often outside of your control.

You will find incompetent people everywhere. It's not always management's fault. We try and try. Sometimes staff just isn't receptive to it.

I think the trainer has been to far removed from the actual working world. Some employees are workable, others are a lost cause.

It's always good to remember that outside events and can influence employee competency.

#1 commercial sales guy had to be fired as a result of mental health issues and over use of pain medication.

Our Inventory clerk was let go because of childcare issues, she had a son that was having severe behavioral problems. We worked with her as much as we could.

I've seen a couple of guys go through divorcees and completely break down. Loose focus, grow a mustache, and trade the Subaru in for a Camaro.
