I use to talk A LOT when I had my old job. I was known as the social butterfly. I've crossed many lines and no one really cared. But the job I have now, I work by myself so I can't talk to anyone.

I've gotten that complaint from two managers, both who were extreme extroverts. They were the type who ran their mouths all day about non-work related subjects and expected you to do the same.

Many extroverts cannot accept that there are different personalities in this world. They will even insist it's their "right" to persecute people who are introverted. Pre-employment personality tests are specifically designed for the very precise purpose of weeding out introverts. I figured this out long ago and learned how to fool the tests, and succeeded many times. That's the kind of discrimination we face.

I don't care if other people talk about things I don't care about, but I'm super annoyed, that it's like high school or something, where I need to provide social support or entertainment while I work and I am getting bugged about it, because I sit quietly and just work. What the hell is the problem? My boss didn't hire me. He is just my supervisor. I can not focus on my work and chit chat.

He seems like a nice guy in some ways but I can not conform to the personality type he wants and work.
What, exactly, did he say to you? Was it actually a complaint, or just a comment that you are very quiet?

I actually got dinged on a performance review for being too quiet. I do agree with you totally, however. We all have differing personalities. "Being too quiet" is such a subjective observation that it would be enough to cause any reasonable introvert a bit of anxiety. All for no good reason.

Since he’s only your supervisor ignore him and stay focused on your work. You might be surprised at how doing so will play out in your favor should your supervisor get canned or transferred.

Being too quiet in the workplace is a comment / complaint that I've never heard before. Interesting...

It was pointed out to me in a review that I was too quiet in meetings, and then quickly amended that the boss could see that there were very extroverted people who talked over everyone. They had no complaints with the quality of my work or reports.

So in meetings after that I made every effort to speak about my reports (completely redundant as we emailed everything to the entire staff anyway).

Couple of years later, boss starts getting on everyones case for talking too much during their meetings - and *I* was specifically singled out. Yep, never talked in another meeting again unless I was asked a direct question.

Ok, I'm glad that mast people think that is not a valid complaint. The conversations aren't at all work related. I do talk when asked how things are going and when given actual work related feedback. And I may talk to a coworker a little if they are sitting next to me. The times I don't talk much is when it is talking among people who are across the room from each other, like 5-10 feet away. I just block that out.

The supervisor is very loud when he talks and doesn't really filter. He doesn't seem mean or rude intentionally.

I'm just wondering what to say if he repeatedly says something. Maybe I'll say, I get distracted easily, so I try not to talk much while working, which is a big reason why I keep out of conversions while working.
