I went for the interview last Thursday (so tomorrow will be a week). I sent a thank you to both the HR rep and the man I interviewed with. Both replied it was great meeting me and they will be in touch soon. I think the interview went well.
I am unsure what 'soon' means. I don't want to seem overeager or desperate but I do want them to know I am interested in the job still (which I said in the thank you). I'd like to get a sense where they are and when they will make a decision.
I do know they really need someone badly.
When is a good time to check back in and should I check in with the HR rep or the man I interviewed with directly?
The company may be having interviews for another 2 or 3 weeks. Then it can take another 2 or 3 weeks to decide who to hire. Remember they are busy people and have other duties that take preference, and expecting a fast answer is acting unreasonable.

Based on how we operate, they could have had additional candidates scheduled to interview this week and then they'll make their decision. If it were me, I would wait until Monday to follow up with HR.
Honestly, I never follow up. If the company is interested, they'll contact you and I think following up hurts more than it helps.
How do they know you are still interested though? I like following up because I want them to know I'm still interested and not get lost in the shuffle.
Anyway I emailed the HR rep and she said the man I met with is on vacation and next week they have some other interviews scheduled, so it will prob be a few weeks before I hear something … and she'll be back in touch.
Now I'm gonna just wait and not follow up anymore, lol … thought she did say feel free to.
It doesn't matter how "soon" soon is. You've already followed up and calling once again won't increase your chances. You've had your "first date" and now you have to wait for her to show interest. Bugging her won't help. In the meantime, you (and "she") are free to date others and that is exactly what you should do, without giving her another thought. An interview means NOTHING...don't act like it does and keep pursuing and finding other opportunities.
They will follow up with YOU almost 100% of the time if they want you.
Companies can be insanely slow which is not fun but they have your number and email. They'll let you know. Keep applying in the meantime.
