First of all I do consider myself lucky to be employed at all right now. Secondly, I have the so much respect for our Veterans.
I have tried to give it time and have even tried 2 different positions within the VA trying to find my niche,
That being said, I have had nothing but issues and am completely dissatisfied with my employment experience.
Here are my issues...
a) My day will consist of 1-3 people who are working and the rest who are socializing and/ or waiting for retirement. I am either over worked by supervisors who have no idea what goes on in their own units- until their superior comes down on them. Suddenly they are making demands although they rarely work themselves, know our names, or much less who does what.
b) Many departments overhire- and then I find myself doing nothing all day. Until my boss decides something is wrong.
c) Only 5% of my day is spent serving our Veterans- most of which I am telling them "I can't help you here, you will have to call our consolidated unit", as I have no access to their claims, bills. The attitude is always "this is the way we have always done things" NOT "how can we do them better"?
d) Socially unacceptable management- Our office manager, as in the big guy- has actually called said things like "thanks for your help hag" and loudly drops the F bomb 10x daily.
I enjoy the benefits, and realize some people strive for these jobs-However I cannot imagine doing this until I retire.
Is it just our VA? Is it just me?? Has ANYONE else hated government employment, by far worse than any civilian job??
Its partly because they are amongst the least funded of the Government agencys. If you worked with DOD you'd get all the current stuff and like it fine.
