Sometimes you will see a job posted online for months, even a year or more. Are these "bogus"? Not that they are scams, but that they are not really openings, just trying to promote/advertise themselves as a company? I have seen some that have been posted, I've applied for jobs like this, heard that I was a great fit, never got a call back....and still seen that opening a year later. Are they serious?

Most of the times they are not..I have experienced that a lot.
The way to check it is to find internal contact and ask him/her to check with HER. I've done it a couple of times - guess what - the position was filled two weeks ago, and Ads was posted FIRST time today.
What can you do? Just apply but do not expect a lot.
Sometimes Cos just gather info on future applicants. They have hiring freeze now, but when things will pick up, they will have a bunch of great resumes.
Another thing is that even if they find internal candidate, they still HAVE to post the job internally / externally.
Best way is networking..finding someone internally who can submit your resume or even to find out for you if the position is real or not..
recruiting agencies do it a lot to get you to be one of their clients. Then they can go and advertise to employers about how they have 1,000,000 potential employees etc etc etc.
Large companies may have had a requisition for the position, but due to circumstances, the position is put on hold. Many large companies have hiring freezes in place these days. Doesn't mean the req isn't there, it just means they can't fill it.
I know that some companies with those ads that always seem to be out there are the type of company that has unrealistic expectations about volume of work that people can do or how quickly they can master a new job without benefit of any training.
One place that I interviewed is such a miserable place to work that people tend not to stick around very long. The hiring manager told me that their turnover rate is just about 60% and that several people in her department require mood altering meds to be able to come to work. These are questions that I have learned to ask and sometimes the answers are just mind numbing.
These days when I see an ad for the same position (or what appears to be the same position) that runs & runs & runs I don't even bother to respond.
A few years back, I applied for one of these, through a placement agency, only to find that they used my 'former employers' to contact about providing services to THEM for openings they had.....I kept a good relationship with a prior employer and I had let them know to expect a reference check from this company. Well - they got a call alright - but it was a sales call - certainly NOT on my behalf. When I confronted the agency, they laughed at me and said "surely you have better business sense than this - we find many great clients like this - it is a standard practice in our industry".........well, it might be - but not courtesy of me - I pulled my resume and went elsewhere.........and this agency continues to run ads like the one I answered in the paper every week!
Sounds like those ads that always have "Growing"; "Growth"; "Grow (with us!)" in them.
Learned a while ago that they are red flags to let you know which ads not to even waste the time reading another word of.
