She lasted nine months. The stress of trying to keep her patients from getting much worse as they waited, sometimes for 12 hours, in an overwhelmed Dallas emergency room was just too much.
"Nurses Eat Their Young." I'm no longer a young RN, but I will attest to personally seeing the RN environment as a toxic one in many places.
Regarding the new grad in med/surg, "orientation" is a joke. A few weeks of school-type learning, CPR, and off you go. I know I'm not the only one who had a horrifying first med/surg job. I still have nightmares about it.
The mentoring/easing in makes much more sense. I hope some places are actually doing it, and giving new people a mentor based on ability and ability to teach, not some sucka** favoritism.
