I work a remote job along with a few others in my company. Some are not present on our online communication system and will rarely make themselves known or felt. I, on the other hand, feel it's even more important for me to make my presence felt since I am physically not there. I try to contribute a lot to the online communications and I have personalized profile pictures of myself to show I'm a real human being even though 99% of the people have never met me.
I think these things are making a difference, as I am the only remote employee who has received a promotion in the last year. I think it just shows I'm making an effort to be part of the "team" and part of the company dialogue, even remotely. What other things can I do to make my presence felt?

Go into the office and attend local meetings and events if possible.

Join a company where everyone is in a different city and you won't have to.

I work with several different folks in various cities on the regular basis throughout the week. No need to make my presence felt because I'm involved in almost every project we've got going on. I'm on just about every conference call that addresses the wider group.

What you're doing is working, evidenced by your promotion. Don't try and do TOO much, there is a fine line between someone making their presence felt vs. someone talking simply to be heard. I've worked with these people before and they get a reputation as someone who does nothing but talk during meetings without much valuable input.

One thing I try and do is to get to know people. So if I'm calling someone about something work related I'll start the conversation asking about them, their family, their city/state, local news, etc. People love to talk about themselves and they will come away from the conversation feeling good after speaking to you.

Continue your efforts, it sounds like you have a good grasp on how to handle it.
