At the time that the Statue of Liberty was erected, we didn't have the rampant unemployment that we do now. We didn't have trade deficits, and an economy in the dumps. We didn't have more people than we have jobs for, and immigrants were willing to do manual labor working in coal mines and digging ditches. Now many potential immigrants want to come in and cherry pick high paying I/T and other high tech jobs when we've got people on unemployment rolls being supported by the taxpayer (not saying that they dont' deserve to collect). The thought of paying people to not work while opening our doors to the rest of the world is utterly preposterous.
I'm editing this to add that the one group of people I do believe need to be fast-tracked to citizenship are those from other countries who join our military and serve for four years. They put their life on the line for us, they certainly should be granted citizenship.

So what you are saying is that there should be an asterisk on the tablet she is holding stating that US unemployment has to be at a certain level for any of that to still count? Or better yet...it should be preempted with "As long as everything is peachy keen; Give me your........."
I seem to recall this country being founded by "and stolen by" immigrants from Europe. Maybe we are just the "Native Americans" of the 21st century.

Companies are still sponsoring visas and green cards. Why? They cannot fill their needs otherwise.
Just FYI - US Forces require at least a green card for enlisted MOSs only.

What I am saying is that as long as we've got people who are qualified that are looking for work and receiving unemployment (and we certainly do at this point) we should not be giving those jobs to anyone except those already in this country. To do so is only increasing our tax burden as it is taxes that pay for unemployment, food stamps, and section 8 that many unemployed are availing themselves of. If an employer can't find someone on unemployment to fill the job, then fine. But I have a hard time believeing that 99.999% of jobs that might go to an H1B worker couldn't be filled by a US citizen desperate for work.
My distant relative who immigrated here 100 years ago worked in coal mines and worked as hired hands on farms. They weren't taking jobs from people already here looking for work. They were filling roles that many refused to perform.
