I'd suggest that if you don't know it, you become familiar with Google Docs. More and more companies are using that platform to share documents with a team across multiple locations. It's free to use, log on and play with it until you are comfortable using it.
I went and looked at it...my only concern would be internet security. I've worked at large companies who had propriatary software that was similar. But thanks for the in put...I'll certainly go play with it for a little while.
Google Docs is great for people who do not have MS Office at home or for smaller companies that don't have a Office license. The templates are very similar to Office and is compatible, but as ReturningWest has noted, for security reasons it will limit the use by many companies as well. I can not imagine uploading something like budget spreadsheets onto a globally shared network so someone else can view it. The Google Docs website is even blocked by our firewall to prevent us for doing such thing.
We use it a lot for non-confidential items when our clients/vendors don't have the full MS Suite (which is unfortunately fairly often in this industry).
As mentioned, it's not terribly secure, but it's perfect for non-confidential/proprietary documents. I use it with some of our vendors for tracking advertising due dates.
