I know alot of people that live in Roxboro, NC and two people that used to work at the Eaton plant in this article. These stories are all too common and the sad part is that the politicians and news media don't really seem to get it.
Our governor, state politicians, and community leaders keep telling us that these types of manufacturing jobs are a thing of the past and that we all need to be retrained for the new jobs of th 21st century......
???
So what you have is a loss of
tens of thousands of jobs in the "old" manufacturing sector (textiles, furniture, cigarettes, parts) that are to be replaced by
thousands of jobs in the "new" sector (biotech, LED's, medical devices, R&D support).
The folks that get "retrained" will all get to compete for 1/10th of the jobs that used to be availabe and that will drive down wages!
The folks that don't rush to get the "retraining" all get to work at Wal-Mart and Home Depot while the rest get to compete with illegal aliens.
