Go to college, there are tons of older students. You can still work at your menial jobs part-time and then once you graduate you can get a real job.

I'm 37 myself and checking this thread, although I already went back to school so I'm pretty much stuck with what I do now [accounting.] Before I did that, I worked for the Post Office for nearly seven years.

The Post Office is looking to get rid of the employees they already have. It's something that has been going on for years---increased automation has reduced the need for employees--but it's been accelerated by the recession.

You wouldn't want to work there anyway, it's a pretty dysfunctional workplace. People start at the absolute bottom, and over the last 10 years or so it was basically impossible for newcomers to move up [they remained hourly employees with no benefits.]

I'd try other government agencies, though. And definitely be ready to move.

At 37 I'd be doing what I am now, teaching. Now, give me 27 and I wouldn't be as dumb as I was then when I couldn't pass a flight physical and got grounded. I would take the Navy's offer to switch to Supply Corps instead of taking a medical discharge. Depression and ego played a part.

If you're making that kind of money, why stop?

Vegas has been hard hit by the recession. My guess is that these days that $100K is down closer to $25K.

Thankfully not. I am in a local gaming bar that is still thriving! Gonna ride it out for a few more years but Vegas is not the kind of city I want to raise my daughter in.
