Yes, that's pretty normal. So and so is no longer with the company.
We had an ongoing joke. If the above was all it said, it translated to, they were fired. If the email said we wish them well in their new endeavors, etc, it meant they chose to leave.
The company I work for had a very rough time financially last year. About 15 managers/supervisors lost their jobs. Only 2 got the "we wish them well in their new endeavors" email. I used to check my office email every morning before leaving my house just to make sure I still had a job!!
Are you positive Tv isn't weekend traveller? Same type of dense questions.
I'm not sure if they are the same person, but I am convinced that he is nothing but a mindless troll. Nobody, seriously....nobody can be that clueless. Makes me wonder if he can dress himself in the morning without step-by-step directions taped to his mirror for him to follow.

I don't think TVSG has the processing ability to come up with the types of questions and phrase them in the way that Weak-Kneed Traveler does.
And considering he wasn't able to dress for interviews without going over each minute detail with us, I'm not sure that gettign dressed every morning is a strong point, either.
Most companies are notifying you thorough email that someone has been let go as a safety precaution for the company. Employees know not to let the employee in the building and know to take care of this persons responsbilities during the interim. I do have to say I have to say this typically happens in smaller companies and not in larger companies.

ROFL - that part was before my time - I stand corrected

Then of course the ultimate in cruelty - "left to spend more time with their family" - which roughly translates to "were told that they'd be fired the first time they sneezed in the wrong direction, so why not walk now?" A stiletto under the third rib would be more merciful.
I once worked for a company that would routinely send an e-mail that includes: "If TVSG is seen on the property, please notify management." That was a little over the top, IMO.
It is procedure to let the managers and heads of departments to know when someone is gone, it is only natural to do that and polite, so the managers can let the other employees know what is going on.
