If you're changing careers or deciding on which one to pursue like I am do tons and tons of research first. There are plenty of people with degrees not doing that well at all. I agree. They've been feeding this line at colleges for years about the great teaching opportunities out there. (I've been waiting since 1991.)

Yeah, it's exactly what goes on with the proprietary trade schools, but the debt load is a lot higher and it's super hard to convince an employer to hire a JD to work some random $10/hour job.

This recession may be caused by financiers run amok, but the laws that allowed them to do so were written by and fought for by lawyers. So I don't think having fewer lawyers is a bad thing.

And if student loan debt were the basis for how much a person earns, lawyers would be making less and everyone else would be earning more.
