I don't blame you for not wanting to provide that sensitive info. Why does everybody and their mamas need our social security numbers anyways? I really don't trust the government in safeguarding this info.
LOL! Do you know who assigned your SSN?
Anyway - to the OP - you might want to just contact your HR department to make sure the letter is legit, and how you're supposed to handle your wife's situation, since she doesn't have an SSN.

The Social Security Admin assigned the SSN .... Does not mean that every Federal agency has those numbers stored in their databases or needs to have those numbers. If you SSN falls into the wrong hands because the government agency that assigned the number but wasn't diligent in guarding it, you'd be a very pissed off identity theft victim.

You can refuse to provide it and they can refuse to cover you. It's your choice.
Just wait until your children are college aged and they want to see their full time enrollment documentation AND that you paid their tuition to remain on the insurance plan.
I already sent them the college stuff for 2 of the kids. They accepted my daughter's transcripts but they told me they do not consider Job Corps to be "college" so my oldest son was denied. He went without coverage for a year but is in the Navy now and they cover him.

She has an SSN now but when she first came after we were married in Canada many years ago, they did not give out SS numbers to people on visas. You had to get the PR (green card) and then apply for SS numbers. They issued an IRS Tax ID number so she could work with her work permit. That was the number I used to enroll her on my benefits. Now, years later, they want her SS number. That makes me leery.
