With a large portion of my job hunt originating from websites such as Monster, Career Builder, Indeed, etc., there is the field where you attach your resume, and then there is normally a field for attaching a cover letter. Do you cut and paste a cover letter? I do, but after reading on CD how most firms scan the incoming resumes in TXT format, I am beginning to wonder if anyone even looks at the cover letter. Thanks!
Only time I use a Cover letter is if they request it and then sometimes no. Really seems like a waste of time today with all the jobs you have to apply to and not get a response out of anyone.
I've been doing that TVandSportsGuy - but wondered if it was worth it. Can you expand a little please? Why do you think it's better to include it? Please tell me you are an HR guy and know that resumes with cover letters are the ones that actually DO get looked at! I'm like OHGreat. I have lost count of the amount of resumes I have sent out - and only heard back from one with a rejection email - which I was pitifully glad to get because then I KNEW someone had actually looked at the resume!

Yes it's worth it, it increases your chances of getting a interview. Every Interview I had was because i copied and paste a cover letter in addition to the attached resume.
Yes I include a cover letter whenever allowed. Just because they scan the documents doesn't mean you can't use a cover letter. It just means you need to follow the same rules--times new roman or arial font, no bold, italicized or underlined text, no bullet points, no lines or text boxes, always left justify, etc.
I always include a cover letter unless its not allowed. I use it to give more specific info on my experience and how it relates to their position. I usually have a template available and edit it for every job. I've written over 200 at this point. Just did one this morning. I think it shows more interest in the job.
I usually include one too. But I am starting to wonder if the employers even read them? I am in the process of looking for an out-of-state job, so I mentioned that in my cover letter. My resume states my friend's local address. Well, I had a few people call me about my resume, and each one of them was surprised to find out that I'm not in that state yet. They obviously didn't read the cover letter.
In cases where you are only allowed to upload one document, you can merge your cover letter and resume into one (i.e., a two-page document). That way, the employer gets both.
