I hear Russia is getting more racist in general.
I hear countless stories of how Iranians and Chinese get discriminated against.
but I don't know for sure, I'm sure most people don't care...
People in Russia might hate Romas, but how do they know he is roma and not Hispanic, Greek, or Italian or just a really dark Russian?
Just happened to run across a relevant article today.
Personally, I find that article to be flakes of truth awash in socialist bull****. I love how they conveniently forgot how this all began to brew under the Soviet regime.
As far as Russian violence goes, I hope your friend is safe while there. Maybe he should come to the US instead? Asians are far more accepted here
Yes Racism is, unfortunately, very prevelant in Russia. On a Russian train a few years ago I read an article about skinheads, in the article it stated that St Petersburg was the worst with over 5,000 members of known skinhead orginizations. That is roughly 1% of the population of the city. It is becoming more frequent, the last incident I heard of was the hanging of a Japanese exchange student (a girl) in July. It is common enough to have been a key part of a popular recent Russian movie entitled Zhara where a Russian rapper/hip hop artist is chased by skinheads. He is half Jewish and half Tatar.
Although it is an obvious, almost accepted part of today's Russia I personally had no problems when I lived there and none last summer when I returned to St Peter. If your friend doesn't hang out in the wrong parts of town at night then everything should be fine. Although I ran into skinheads multiple times and spoke with them a few times, I never once had a problem. They seemed more to think it was cool than to really beleive in and act on it.
Then again, I'm white and I speak Russian, so who knows?
Just tell him to be smart, be careful and stick to areas where there are other tourists.

What gets me is that Russian skinheads seem to have very short memories: their grandparents were victimized by Nazi's as well up to being assaulted and murdered for being Russian duirng WW II.
Racism and ethnocentrism are much more prevalent in Russia than in North America or Western Europe. I say "ethnocentrism" because even being white and looking very Slavic is often not enough to escape prejudice. You can meet different people, of course, but Russia has a historic preoccupation with blood lineage and ethnic purity. Lately, the Russian government has been rallying its people around the flag by playing upon those old prejudices, so if anything, Russia is becoming even less tolerant. In the last decade or so, religion has become a part of Russian nationalism in a big way, so the latter no longer needs event he flimsiest rational justification.
I have a Bulgarian friend that is of Roma descent (he has brown skin) and is thinking of visiting Moscow. I have seen videos of Russian skins attacking random people in subway cars and I was wondering just how typical is this of Moscow? I do not think of Russia as this way but if someone here with more knowledge of the matter could tell me if its safe I would appreciate it.

You can type in a lot of things in Youtube. If you type in "race riots UK" you'll find a lot of videos too. I've never been to Russa but I wouldn't be basing an opinion of a whole country on Youtube.

Sorry, but I have no intentions of experiencing that hate. I wonder why foreigners continue to migrate there, if they have to stay home all day or fear being attacked.
