None of those cities are next to each other.

Please consult a map.

My bad, I went and re-read the OP's question again, I thought he/she meant as in cities that were the major cities within one country, not cities that were close to one another.

My bad.

This is true.

Also - Garmisch/Partenkirchen in Bavaria, though they're not large.

Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong are side-by-side (north to south), although two of them aren't 'large cities'.

Budapest got unified in 1873 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1935.

Vienna and Bratislava are called Twin Cities for marketing reasons nowadays.

Are there twin cities that are equal in size and influential?

Not like Minneapolis and St pauls, the first is much more "known" than the latter.

I think again in the US DC and Baltimore would fit

I don't know if these count but there are more than a few US/Mexico "twin cities" Some I remember is Laredo, Texas/Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas and Nogales, Arizona/Nogales, Sonora.

Also, if I am not mistaken, Eagle Pass, Texas/Piedras Negras, Coahuila and perhaps the most famous one, El Paso, Texas/Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.
