Hello all, my job has building in Mumbai and I want to relocate to another country. I live in Ohio right now so I've been thinking about moving there. I am a black independent parent who only speaks English. Does anyone know how it would be like there, or of another place i should try to start out this will be my first time moving out of the country.

Typically, if you turn up in a foreign country looking for work and you don't have a work visa the immigration officials will simply put you on the next plane home. You need to get a definite job offer if you want to play it safe which I suggest you should if you are taking a child with you. If you were a single fit young man you could afford to take risks but otherwise it's a bad idea.

It's a terrible hellhole. 25 million people, half of them living in slums without sanitation or electricity, terrible public transport which is immensely crowded, nothing compared to any First World city. Hygiene awful overall, dirty, filthy, yucky. An endless concrete jungle which is extremely polluted and smog-filled during the dry season. Heat and especially humidity very uncomfortable during the wet season. Corrupted police, pickpockets and beggars just waiting en masse for a westerner.

I would never ever move there.

Well, the cost of living is cheap...other than that - see post above. I guess the best thing that can be said is that it isn't Delhi, which if possible is even worse than Mumbai.

Wait, you're female, right? You have to seriously consider if you want to be groped every single day. I don't think it matters if you're black or white, in many crowded parts of the city men will assault you and grab your boobs and ass if you're walking alone.

I have just been looking at Mumbai on Bing maps - aerial photos. Huge slum areas are clearly visible where there are no cars or even roads - just shacks almost touching each other. Mumbai is the kind of place where people will sell one of their kidneys to get a ticket out of there. No sane person would go there unless they are filthy rich and can afford an upmarket protected neighbourhood with guards.

Assuming the OP's salary is high enough (which I assume it must be), she wouldn't have to deal with most of the unpleasantness mentioned.
