I'm not American but Americans are often singled out for their ignorance - especially geography, history, current events.etc. At least from people I know, mostly online, I haven't found Americans any more or less ignorant than most nationalities. Honestly, there are plenty of ignorant people here in Australia.

Do you think there's any truth to the idea or is it anti-American propaganda?

The 'average' American is probably as much a victim of stereotyping as the rest of us, I think this includes the 'Americans are ignorant' nonsence we often read about on this site.

about foreign affairs , yes

about other things , no

America is so big , it would take a lifetime to see it all so you tend to be less concerned about whats happening beyond its shores

If you're comparing America to Canada or Australia, I don't know.

But as someone who grew up in a third world country, I knew much about world geography at the age of 12 than did the average American. Most of my friends did as well.

13 years ago I was talking to 4 Americans regarding how South America became Latin America. All of them kept on insisting that spanish and portuguese did not have anything to do with it and that the Latins are only the ones in Latin America.

So, are you saying that only 4 Americans out of 200+ million back then made you think all Americans are ignorant?

Its anti-American propaganda. Lot of those type of people like to make it out that Americans are the most ignorant people in the world. Well, maybe in the developed world there might be some truth to that, but certainly not in the whole world.

I'm not even sure what the "average" American is. I'm an American and have lived in the U.S. nearly all my life. I've always kept up with world news and events, travel internationally on a regular basis and can speak 2 languages fluently.

So, should I be considered an "average" American? If not, then who is? Some farmer out in the wheat fields of Iowa? I don't know.

USA is a vast country: generalizing about 320.000.000 is quite stupid.
Too many americans praise europeans as if they were god-like beings, but there's A LOT of ignorant people in Italy and our public education SUCKS!
As far as the rest of Europe is concerned, I honestly can't speak for another nationalities such as britons, germans, russians and spaniards...
