Which is safer: Cancun or Orlando? - CNN Video

Look at this video from 1:20. Not only have they got the murder rates totally back to front but the guy (Lawrence?) at the end says NY, LA, Chicago, Philly, Houston and Phoenix have a combined pop. of 20 million, matching the US annual visitor number to Mexico. That's interesting, because I make New York alone having a population of 20 million and combined with the others it's 70 or 80 million.

2010 to 2013; pop. | murders | rate per 100,000

2010-

Orlando; 2,824,356 | 123 | 4.35

Cancún; 705,873 | 98 | 13.88

2011-

Orlando; 2,864,187 | 146 | 5.10

Cancún; 734,078 | 112 | 15.26

2012-

Orlando; 2,920,552 | 129 | 4.42

Cancún; 762,533 | 100 | 13.11

2013-

Orlando; 2,975,658 | 117 | 3.93

Cancún; 762,533 | 93 | 12.20

I used the CSA for Orlando, I already had it sorted and saved in a file. Some say CSA is a better fit for certain cities. MSA is probably better for Orlando although they screwed around with the counties it contained in the FBI UCR in the last few years because of a delay in the census bureau delineations so I used the CSA I'd saved.

Which city did you think was more dangerous? It's quite surreal how they've got this wrong and I've seen a few websites saying the same thing. Very peculiar..very peculiar indeed....

Sensationalism at it's finest.

Obviously Orlando is a safer city overall, but anyone that has been to Cancun would know that the Cancun data is useless for touristic purposes. The touristic part of Cancun is on an isthmus while much of Cancun the city is in a different area. Most tourists don't ever visit Cancun the city and most of the crime/murders probably take place over there while the touristic Cancun is quite safe.

The data of the OP is much more important for anyone thinking about moving to Cancun, but not for someone that wants to do tourism in Cancun. The Cancun for everyday living is different from the Cancun designed for vacations.

This is not the case for all Mexican touristic cities. A good example is Acapulco. There the main tourist area is integrated to the everyday living city and that's why vacationing in Acapulco is technically much more dangerous than in Cancun. While the tourist area of the latter is physically separate from the everyday Cancun and is well protected, in Acapulco its all integrated so anything can truly happen at any time in the tourist strip and in fact it does.

I would even go as far as saying that the touristic part of Cancun is as safe as the touristic parts of Orlando.

With that said, I don't know who in their right mind would compare Orlando with Cancun when its obvious that the person looking to vacation in Orlando is looking for a vacation experience that is not the main attraction of Cancun. Cancun's competition is Miami, Varadero, San Juan, Punta Cana, and even other beach destinations in Mexico itself.
