Both aren't easy to acquire. Just getting a long-term visa or permanent residence in either Germany or Japan is already a challenge itself.

Maybe if someone really, really likes German or Japanese culture and society - enough to want to live there forever. :-)

An American friend of mine just got his permanent residency this week after a looong stressful battle of four years. I wouldn't recommend it anybody. I could write a book on what he had to go through....

Here it's 5 years and proficiency of the Finnish or Swedish language for other nationalities, 2 years for Swedes, Norwegians, Danes and Icelanders.
