- that our culture is 50/50 Western and Eastern just because we happen to border Russia. In reality our culture is 95% Western and 5% Eastern
- that we are 'less Scandinavian' because we speak a non-Germanic language. We are thoroughly Scandinavian. In reality Iceland is the outlier, not Finland, because Iceland is an isolated island
- That we would hate Sweden. We don't. We love Sweden, they are our best friend, our big brother, but we hate them when it's about sports. We might dislike them concerning their PC internal policies, but we will never abandon them.
I asked on a big Finnish forum some years ago that would you be in favour of Sweden and Finland uniting as a federal state or reuniting as one entity. 62% of over 600 votes were in favour of either possibility. The Swedes said "Finlands sak är vår" during WWII, and it means 'Finland's cause is our'. We feel the same. Sweden's cause is our cause, and you can always count on us.
- The big stereotype I want to address are the seasons. Finland is very far north, but no, we here in the south do not have 6 months of darkness. In December the day is 6 hours long, but that doesn't mean we see Auroras every night. You might see auroras 2 times a month, but as winter is terribly cloudy here, you can't see them just looking at the sky. The short daylight in the south (which is just an hour less than in northern Germany or the Netherlands) don't make you suicidal. You have plenty of time to adjust to the less daylight. The stats say that the peak in suicides is in May, when the day is 17-18h long.
One of the most bizarre for Australia is corked hats. If you ever do see someone wearing a broad brimmed hat wth corks dangling from it, you can be 99% certain that they are a foreign tourist who's been off the plane for less than five or six hours.
The 1st one is just stupidity imo but the 2nd i kinda get, i mean its closer to Southeast Asia than Northeast Asia not culturally but geographically and climate-wise just like Hong Kong and South China (Guangdong, Yunnan, Fujian etc.) because the Eastern half of Siberia is Northeast Asia.
*We all have incomprehensible "Crocodile Dundee" accents
*We live in rural areas or the desert (not urbanized)
*Everyone eats vegemite
*Spiders and snakes are everywhere, and everyone will be bitten by one someday
*We all say "g'day mite"
*Kangaroos roam the streets
*We're racist and xenophobic
*We say "shrimp" (nope, it's "prawns")
*Australians are tanned and have beautiful bodies (we are actually one of the most fattest countries)
*We are ignorant rednecks with no literacy and knowledge (we are actually one of the most smarter nations out there)
I think that's about it?
