Thailand's advantage is very cheap air fares in and no visa hassle. And most tourists DO wan to go where the action is already.
Fairly recently, the PRC implemented a 30 day no Visa policy for Hainan for nationals of the US, Canada, EU countries. Airfares are pretty cheap if already transiting through China which many tourists going to Thailand do already. I think in a few years Hainan will give places like Phuket some good competition.
I would most definitely be interested in going to Hainan at some point for a warm weather getaway
How can anyone possibly be disappointed in Italy? It's probably the best country for travelling.
I also find it hard to fathom someone being disappointed in Italy, I have been from Piedmonte to Puglia and the country just fascinates me with its drawbacks and all.
Totally agree. Thailand is so overrated and I find it to be way too sleazy and liberal for my taste. There are also so many tourists that it feels like a SE Asian Disney Land for adults who like the beach and warm weather. I know the local Thai people aren't bad people in general, and its great that they speak English to some extend, but the sleaziness I can't get past. All these western expats and tourists drunk on the streets hanging out at bars and with all the prostitution around, it just isn't my thing and appears so uncivilized and gross.

Unfriendly people, expensive, line cutters, ripped off by money changers and corrupt police....wife and I hated Italy.
