How does someone 'go to the press'? (money, suggestions)

I have a story that I'm trying to get picked up by the media. I'd prefer tv or radio, but I'd accept a magazine or newspaper article if I can't get any of the big guys to pick up my story.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this? I've tried emailing various writers and I haven't even gotten one response.

Maybe I have to do a better job 'selling it' (figuratively as I'm not looking for money).

If it's not being picked up, it may not be what they are looking for. Are you looking at the big fish or the small fish? Small local papers are far easier to get into than the New York Times.
