My wife and I will be visiting Cody for a few weeks, sometime between late August and October, on a fun-fact-finding trip, with the intent of finding our 'forever' community. These forums have been immensely helpful, a great starting point! However, I've never seen the following items discussed:

Airport - Does Delta (or any commercial airline) fly in/out year-round or just seasonally? When I try to view Delta's schedule late fall through late winter, it shows no flights.

Medical Care - Are there quality GP physicians (who accept new patients)? Specialists? Great dentists? Does the hospital have trauma center (hope I never need it, just wondering)? Air ambulance to larger hospitals?

Real Estate - Best neighborhoods (no dead cars or mattresses 'growing' in yards)? Bad areas to avoid (crime-ridden, drugs)? Is there a better time of the year (cheaper) to buy a home?

Shooting Range - I enjoy LD target shooting (800-1200 yards). Will the local range accommodate this?

Quilting - My wife is a wiz with needle & thread, is there a local guild or club?

Drinking Water - Fresh? Clean? Tasty? Abundant?

Environmental Issues - Any specific hazards, superfund sites, etc?

Thanks for any info to fill-in the gaps!

Welcome aboard. Until the Cody people respond to your questions, I have a question for you! Have you ever been to Cody on previous occasions or will this be the first? I think knowing this will be of benefit to us all.

Do you like the color brown?

Thanks for greetings, Gosh. Yep, I spent some time in & around Cody in the late 1970s. I'd imagine much has changed since then, which is why many visits over the coming months will be valuable for refreshing old & positive memories ... plus learn all the 'new' stuff (good, bad, & ugly). Looking forward to hearing from Cody folks!

Wyoming Quilt Guilds - WY Quilting Guilds listed in alphabetical order by city

Probably also have more casual groups.

There is a big winter gap in Delta's service https://flyyra.com/ Better schedule your visit for August or September. Or use Billings or Casper.

There are some superfund sites Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

but the size & severity is comparatively modest.

Gosh - I remember Cody being a small, funky town (funky in a good way). We are 'seasoned' small-town people (Lk Tahoe, Gold Beach), who are allergic to cities and city-mentality people. We spend most time outdoors, live life simply, have few needs, and are not impressed with the latest-and-greatest material-chasing crowd. And having Yellowstone in our back yard would be a huge bonus! Don't know what else to tell you, other than exploration (the journey) will be as rewarding as the destination. If you have solid info (your earlier comment about "liking the color brown"??), please share!

"liking the color brown" refers to the predominant landscape view you'll have in the area.

this is not a riparian area with lush growth and undergrowth, the vegetation is brown most of the year. Unless irrigated land or sub-irrigated near a body of water, the month or so of "green" in the landscape view is very transient.

unlike many riparian areas of the USA, the "undergrowth" or surface layer of vegetation beneath the trees there is more rock and hardscrabble barren dirt with a few adapted weeds than a secondary growth layer covering the earth.

Yes. Exactly. Always seemed arid to me over there. Haven’t checked the average rainfall figures to back that up, just going off personal observations.

But the color brown describes everything from rock formations to vegetation.

The numbers of tourists have increased dramatically over the years. There are positives and negatives that come with this. You’ll have more restaurant options and if you beat the crowds coming back into town for dinner, you’ll be fine. There’s a Walmart super center. I don’t have one of those where I live.

I haven’t been to Yellowstone in years. The traffic is frustrating and it’s hard to get anywhere because of people stopping every time a coyote crosses the road. I’ll go again one of these days!

You seem to have the right game plan, though. Making several visits at various times of the year is a good call.

One thing you haven't addressed is jobs. I'm not sure if you're retiring or working from home, but if you need to find work, be aware that Cody is a summer only tourist economy as well as agricultural with surrounding ranches. This means that good paying jobs are few and far between. Wyoming in general is not the cheapest place to live so keep this in mind, if the situation applies to you.
