I am planning on going to WY and then up to MT next summer. My main reason is I want to move to either WY or MT in two years. What are some great smaller towns I should visit. Something between 5000-15000 people. I am a teacher so it will have to be somewehre that would be easier to get a job.I am a single mom so I need kids friendly places. I am from Texas in the DFW area and will be driving. Are there any must see places I should visit for fun why I am there. Thanks for the help.

Lander, Buffalo, Sheridan and Cody would be my top choices in that size. Sheridan might be pushing the upper limit, and Buffalo might be just below your lower limit, but they're both worth a look-see, and they're only a half-hour apart.

Those are the garden spots of Wyoming. Others not quite as nice and either a bit smaller or larger than you hope for are Sundance, Rock Springs, Afton, Green River, Laramie, Riverton, Thermopolis,Gillette and Worland.

Don't throw out places like Casper (50,000 population) or Cheyenne. Not bad at all and a lot more goods and services.

Any of the above will have less crime than Dallas and be a lot more kid friendly. Pay for teachers varies, but in general starting BA wage is around 40,000 per year, with most places paying both sides of retirement.

Don't forget Powell... Nice town of almost 6000 people, has one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation and a good junior college! Its also an easy drive to Cody!

You may have read some of my other posts regarding teaching in Wyoming. If you haven't, in a nutshell I said I wish I would have moved back to Wyoming (my homestate) after being in MT for 13 years. My take home pay doubled coming to Gillette. That takes quite a few things into consideration, but my in pocket money was a lot more. Rent is a bit higher here in Gillette than it was in Billings (although I owned my home), but home prices are pretty comparable. Taxes, in general, are lower in Wyoming. I couldn't afford to live on a teacher's wage in Montana anymore with it being one of the lowest paid teacher salary states while Wyoming is near the top of the list. We love Gillette. With about 30K people in the county it is a nice sized town with tons to do for kids. If you want any more info about teaching in either state (particular towns, etc.) just let me know and I might know about some of the areas you're interested in. Let us know the type of landscape you like, what you as a family like to do for recreation, etc. Wyoming and Montana are pretty diverse from one area of the states to another. We're all willing to help!

Here are the cities and towns in Wyoming (as well as county and population info), that have at least 3000 people (according to Wikipedia). I know you mentioned wanting to be somewhere that has between 5000 and 15000 people, but you might want to consider a little smaller and a bit larger towns as well, just depending on what amenities you will require.

Most of these places have everything you need for day-to-day living (groceries, gas, etc.), but for some things you may have to travel a bit further (airports, movie theaters, etc.) to a larger city or town. In some cases, folks travel to neighboring states for the things they can't get locally. There are reasons that could be found to live in any of these places, but it really depends on what your needs and desires are.

Since the list isn't really that long, you might want to research each of these places before you make your trip. That way you can decide which ones look good to you before you get there.

If you go to the city-data website ( http://www.city-data.com/city/Wyoming2.html ) for the state of Wyoming, you can see where these places (and others) are located throughout the state. You can also research each of these towns there, to see if it would suit you. Just click on the links from the drop-down list. You can select from larger cities (6000+ population), smaller cities and towns (1000 to 6000 population), or even very small towns (<1000 population).

Buffalo Johnson 3,900
Casper Natrona 49,644
Cheyenne Laramie 53,011

Thanks everyone. I will look into these towns more. I love the mountian views but realize it is more expensive living closer to them so that is not a big deal. I am looking to move mainly for winter weather and cooler summers. I grew up with tons of snow in the winter and I really miss it. I am mainly just looking for a town not to far from a hospital and that has a store to buy food and a gas station. One that is not more than an hour from a bigger town that might have more stores. A good school system is a must. I love country living and smaller towns. I might look into bigger towns but not to big. I like the feel of a smaller town. Thanks for the information.

What age/grade do you teach? Lander/Riverton areas are nice...complete with mountain views..but it can be difficult (from what I've head) to find rental properties.

Something to consider--if you haven't already--when trying to obtain a Wyoming teaching license, you will need to take and pass the Wyoming Constitution test first. You can set it up via proxie with a principal or professor in your area for free. It does take a little studying though, but I took it this past spring and passed on the first go. Didn't get a job in Wyoming--yet--but then I'm a new grad and from what it sounded like, there were tons of applicants for the positions I tried for. (not trying to be discouraging, just realistic...after all, I'm not giving up hope!)

I was a single mom in Lander (for a year) in 98-99 and really loved that town. It's nestled up against the Wind River mountains and is sunny more days than not. Though I've heard that the cost of housing has risen dramatically in the past 10 years, I still think it's a good town for people with kids. They have a nice city park and lots of outdoorsy things to see and do, plus a nice community indoor swimming pool. My daughter was in the 4th grade there, and we really liked the schools.

Good luck in your search. Georgiamt is a good person to ask any teaching questions...she's been a great help to me! (There's also a thread on here for Wyoming Teachers-questions and answers, if you do a search)
