I am military and just found out I am moving to Cheyenne, Wy. I have been looking for 3 days on-line for a place to rent. I am looking for either a duplex, townhome, or house preferably with a garage. The housing rate I'll be receiving is a big drop compared to what I'm receiving now, however I can't find anything that seems to be suitable for the housing rate I'll be getting. Does anyone know of any decent places to rent? I need at least a 2 bedroom. Any help I can get is appreciated!

Are you by any chance with the National Gaurd? I'm just asking because you might be able to contact them to see if they know of anything. You might contact them anyways just in case. Most of the WY Gaurd have been deployed and there might be a chance that one of them has a spot for you to stay until you can find something.

Also try contacting realtors in and around Cheyenne. A lot of landlords are starting to go through real estate agents to rent out their property rather than having to deal with renters directly.

Good Luck to you and I hope you can find something.

How much is your housing allowance?

I would call Pro Management or Preferred Management. They're the two largest rental companies in town.

Here are their websites:

Pro Management
Rental Properties

Preferred Management
Residential Listings - Houses & Townhouses (http://www.cheyennepreferred.com/houses.html - broken link)

We just moved to Cheyenne this week on a military PCS. I was panicking trying to find a 3 bedroom home on our BAH rate!! I used ahrn.com and found an amazing house! We can still afford to utilities after we pay rent!! All landlords posting on the site are subject to approval by the DoD so it is next to impossible to get scammed. I tried searching craigslist first and kept getting Nigerians begging for money every time!

Excellent! Glad you found a place, and quick too. How soon does your things arrive, or did you move yourself?

Thanks for all the input so far. I have tried AHRN, but they are either way under my BAH rate and not at all what I want or need, or they are really nice and way too expensive. My new BAH rate is going to be $960. I get almost $1300 where I'm at now and only pay $900 for a 3 bed/2.5 bath w/ 2 car garage. I am starting to think I will not get anything near that for less than $1000 in Cheyenne. I am also starting to think I'm going to have to wait until I get there to find anything. I really wanted to find something on-line, but I am having no luck.

Our BAH rate went down when we moved to WY too... though, the Quality of life was WAY better. Anyway, we bought a house and all the mortgage/insurance/taxes/fees stuff was about $950 (for a 2200sq/ft, 3bed/2bath/2car). Utilities were another ~$200/month. Anyway, that was cheaper than renting by about $200, plus that money came back to us when we sold the house last summer.

I hadn't planned on buying a house b/c I only have 2 years on my enlistment left. I was actually hoping to move to Denver when I'm done with my 2 years. Do you happen to know of any nice townhomes or communities I should look into?

2 years is enough time to miss out on the capitol gains taxes. Plus, the equity we pulled out meant we were able to save the VA loan hassle (it's a hassle), and put 20% down on the next house.

Sorry, we were in Lander, WY.... wife was an O3 with the Public Health Service, providing medical service on the Reservation up there. I've only traveled through Cheyenne (grew up in Lander as well) and stayed in hotels there.
