Every problem I have ever had with the DMV ... a true legit problem I would immediately call my state representative or send an email. My rep now is Tommy Pope but in the past my rep was Herb Kirsh. I have always received an answer or the help I needed.

If you want to know why the office closed early ... go to the SC House of Representatives website pull up your rep and there is a place you can send a message.

Here is why all S.C. DMV offices were closed on May 10th.
A state holiday I have never heard of.

Confederate Memorial Day is a state holiday in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia on the fourth Monday in April. In Mississippi it is observed on the last Monday in April.

In South Carolina and North Carolina it falls on May 10, 2013.

I called the local office and got an automated person. I called Columbia about how will I know if it is ok to drive to an office since no one is able to tell me their correct hours due to my experience on May 10th. They said, "oh we were closed for a holiday"
I looked on my calendar and see Armed Forces Day on May 18th and Cinco de Mayo Day on May 5th.
My calendar shows nothing for May 10th.

I was forced to ask them...WHAT holiday?

I wonder who else was closed the 10th, banks, etc.
