Cumberland Maryland was at one time one of the most beautiful places to call home. The historic ambiance of historic downtown was a wonderful place from sight seeing, antique shopping or dining outside with friends on the mall while listing to a local band perform. While growing up there I remember all the fun I had from school activities to the exciting summertime that awaited everyone after school let out that the fairgrounds would open or the pool at Constitution Park. Those were the great days when young adults never worried so much. There was no need to. The crime wasn’t as bad as it is today but again where isn’t crime bad?
Cumberland had a lot props at one time. The schools system had to be one of the best as I can remember. I had a wonderful education that my parents whom also attended the same high schools, did as well. Jobs were easy to come by as my father move my mother and I there before I was old enough to start grade school. Both of my parents were from the area but as the natives always said, “ If you’re from Cumberland and you leave, you’ll eventually move back”.
The idea of leaving your doors unlocked was never questioned. Residents in the area kept in eye out when you were out of town. The word “Murder” or “Assault” were only heard of east of Frederick near Baltimore. Neighbors cared and were considered family and kids in the neighborhoods never had to worry about their bikes being stolen or paying attention to what streets they weren’t allowed on. As far back I can remember the only thing I had to worry about was to have my homework done and be in the house before the streetlights came on.

Early adulthood for me started in 1998. I was ready for high school at that time. I remember my parents reading the “Cumberland Times News” the local paper and shaking their heads daily while saying “Why” on a regular basis. That’s pretty much when I realized that Cumberland wasn’t the same as it was growing up.
Jobs seemed to come by less often and the community needed more jobs somehow. Residents had to travel out of the area to Hagerstown, Martinsburg, Winchester and Bedford...

Big mistake!! First of all the prison became a Maximum Prison, then they added on later including a Super Max prison for the prisoners serving life sentences. Nobody ever thought to realize that the prisoners had families that wanted to be near their dear loved ones who have committed gruesome murders. Just remember the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree so you can image what kind of people started moving into the area! This prison isn’t just your average, regular prison. This prison is...

Increase of living sky rocketed on top of how the economy was doing. People were hesitant on renting out their home to these people so more money had to be put down and rules were far beyond what they were at one time. Crime also skyrocketed. Drugs were coming in and out and eventually the state issued Allegany County a new police task force on top of the sheriffs department, C3I and police department we already had. My parents noticed there more police logs in the paper per day then employment...

It was never like this before. As I continued to talk with my husband we decided that once we had children we would have to leave Cumberland for them to have a proper education. At the same time we knew that it would be harder for us to have children and continue to live in the same environment. We knew that if we did we would be stuck in this town forever. I confided in my girlfriends about our concern and they agreed that they would also leave if they could get out. My husband and I worked more...

Cumberland is very beautiful and it was more beautiful back then. Just because its historic and it’s pretty doesn’t mean that you should move there. Do your research and you’ll find out that it’s not all cracked up to be what it is. It’s just a matter of time when there are no natives living there besides the trash that is moving in now. I love Cumberland, I really do but it’s not practical and it’s not a way to live. I have included websites that you really to look at before considering...
