The Art of getting yourself employed...(get past the front desk receptionist)

1. First off target and or scope out a job or company you want to work for...and once in your crosshairs, don't loose sight of them.

If you want the job, tell yourself your going to get it, no matter what...

2. Sometimes the hardest obstacle to get past can be the front desk receptionist...who always tend to think they're 'god'...or seem to always be on some power trip...this can often be your biggest obstacle...

They're the ones who always seem to form a wall between you, and the owner or person in charge of hiring....it is vital that you show yourself to that person...if you truly think your the best canidate, and want the job...than show it, buy demonstrating your interpersonal skills to the one who makes that decision...for in the end, if your able to make a 'connection', you will stand out to them much more than a stack of applications....
But again...often the barrier to that is the front desk receptionist who will stop you dead in your tracks with the following statements...

'Mr Henry can't see you now'....or

'Just give the application to me'....or,

'That won't be nessicary, I have all the information i need right here' (meaning sometimes you want to add something, that you know, will make your application stand out, but all knowing receptionist insists it's complete as is)...

These front desk receptionist seem to create a barrier between you and your future...their employed, and so don't feel the same sense of angst, or urgency towards your need to get hired and earn money.

When they walk in with a stack of dull dry applications and slap them on the table, it greatly deminishes your chances of standing out and getting hired...(applies to resumes too)....you must make that one on one contact with a decision maker, if you want the job....

Often times the boss or hiring manager will tell you to come back the next day, only to be stopped in your tracks by the power hungry front desk receptionist...

'Umm...Mr Henry told me to come back today for a follow up'

Receptionist '~' 'Mr Henry is not seeing anyone right now...tell me what it is you have to say and I'll tell him'...

I have never not gotten a job where I had the chance to meet with those in charge of hiring...the only time I don't get hired is when head strong receptionist insist on playing 'god' by disrupting the natural flow of interaction between myself and possible future employer...

I'm sorry, no one can get past me today, cause I'm not in a good mood, me and my ex-husband had a fight last night, and I feel like taking it out on you!!

Give me your application or Resume, and I'll shred, I mean hand it over to Mr Henry next week sometime when I feel like it.

Now scat!!

If you can get past the receptionist, and express your concerns and or interest in the job directly to boss or hiring manager...your chances of getting hired increase by 50%....
Cause once you've made yourself known to them, it's harder for them to say no...cause now they feel they know you...expecially if your a charmer...

If your not a 'charmer'...than your probablly just best to let your application or Resume do the talking...

3. Which relates to number 2. is always go back...multiple times...always show interest...think of ways to keep yourself in their 'memory bank'...don't allow yourself to fade into a stack of paper...

Remember...they will not hire you if they don't know you exist....
And it can be frustrating when you go in to see the 'boss' or hiring manager, and your all dressed up to impress...just to be stopped dead in your tracks by the receptionist who insists the boss is busy and cannot see you at that moment.

Like I said earlier...my hire rate is 100% when allowed to dialogue with owner or boss or hiring manager...it never fails...but when not allowed to...my hire rate drops to like 30% or below...so it does make a difference...
Those who employ are human, and often there's such little distinction between applicants that often all their looking for is an eager willing applicant...'OK, your hired'...

Sometimes it can be that simple for them...their not always trying to 'nuke' the process.

So, I guess to sum this post up...it should really be titled:
If you want to get hired, get past the receptionist'....

Whether in person or over the phone.
Yes I know the boss depends on them to create a buffer between themselves and pesty employment seekers...but by doing so, they often miss out on 'the prize canidate'....

Anyways I guess I'm done with my rant...it's been a long time in the making...had such a encounter today, and it really annoyed me...

They specifically told me to come back today to get this thing rolling...and the receptionist was like a brick wall...

They, the receptionist, weren't even there yesterday...but today insisted on taking paper work, and insisted they would give it to hiring manager...
And when I called back...it was still on the desk....I never trust 3rd parties to handle my paper work, cause you never know how they will present it, or where they'll put it... like in some anonymous stack that the janitor will grab and throw away...

So I always call back...or even go back...to make sure it was delivered...

Anyhow...I'm outta here...

    Update:

I called back today...and that same receptionist wouldn't let me speak with the decion maker...

I felt like saying 'Look lady, your not the one unemployed, your not the one facing billing deadlines, your not the trying to get hired...for crying out loud let me speak to such and such!!'

But I didn't...instead I kept composed and simply said 'Thank you Ma'am...have a good day'....
