i just wrote my personal statement for my residency application. It needs proofreading so i thought i'd post it here. Please do leave feedback and let me know what you like and what i should change.

Let the beauty you love be what you do – there are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth - Rumi
The first time I read this quote by Rumi I felt like he was talking to me. Since I was 5 years old I have wanted to be a doctor. Over the years my definition of doctor has changed. For a long time I thought that surgery was my calling. That was until the time I rotated in internal medicine in final year medical school. It was then that I realized that Internal Medicine was MY way of kneeling and kissing the earth. Why you may ask? I’ve never felt more alive than when racking my brains for a diagnosis. Not only do I get to exercise my intellect but I also have a more personal relationship with my patients, which is the reason I enjoy Medicine. I want to be there for my patients through every step of their rehabilitation/recovery. There is no greater reward for being a physician than to improve the quality of life of a patient.

Even though my family is against my decision to pursue my residency in the United States I am convinced that it is the ideal destination for me. Doing my residency here will give me the best training possible for me to pursue my dream of helping the people of Kenya. I feel that sometimes an outsider’s opinion is needed to put things in perspective. That’s exactly what I hope my training in the United States will give me. Since I graduated from medical school I have been volunteering my services at the government hospital in my neighborhood. My experience there has just reaffirmed my desire to return to Kenya upon completion of my training.

I believe that my compassion, will power, thirst for knowledge and commitment to patient care will contribute to my success in your program. I have had to overcome many hurdles in my path to becoming a physician most of which I had no control over. Some may have made me question my choice of profession but not for long. With the advantage of hindsight I know that each one has cemented my goal of excelling as a physician and a person.

Upon completion of my Internal Medicine residency I intend to do a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and a Masters in public health. I know that these combined will aid in improving the healthcare system in Kenya and other Third world countries. This is a cause very close to my heart. I have seen much suffering, most of it avoidable and it is my goal to do whatever is humanly possible to alleviate it. I want my life to have purpose, when I am old and grey I intend to be able to look back and say that I lived my life to the best of my potential, not only for my sake but for the benefit of others too.
The great and glorious masterpiece of man is to know how to live to purpose - Michel de Montaigne

A few days ago I met a 9 year old girl who told me that she hopes I become a great doctor. Being a physician is an honor and privilege and carries great responsibility. I believe that I possess the qualities required to excel as one and to be a very valuable asset in your program. All I need is for you to give me a chance to prove myself.
