Adopting Ben

Posted 11-23-2013 at 09:43 PM by Orion2

Although I have mixed feelings my brother, our GSD and I went to an adoption event today. I would have liked to have adopted a lab mix but Judy was aggressive toward the puppy so I passed on it. We adopted this little guy instead:

They tell us he's a Chow mix, with what is anyone's guess. He's two months old, too young to be neutered but is already house broken and has learned that he needs to wait for his collar to be put on before he goes out. He's a little wary of Judy because she's let him know who's alpha, mostly by poking him - something she does to almost everything. She has been aggressive with him just as she is with the cats, when he's ventured near her food and in the same manner. She let him drink from the communal water dish, that surprised me a little. She had a difficult day, she got testy by the time we left the adoption event and was snapping at other dogs who ventured too close to me so I think by tomorrow she'll be a bit more mellow with Ben.

I am hoping she'll find him a companion and play with him, she tries to play with the cat - her best non-human friend but he doesn't have a clue what she's doing when she bows to him. Ben followed her a bit when I took them both out so it seems he's not intimidated by her. They'll have their own space, Ben has a crate that he went into as if he knew it was his home and my girl has a chair.

I'm hoping this wasn't too soon for the guys and my girl, I'm conflicted about trying to take everyone's needs into consideration. It's so difficult when only one family member can talk and he's the least reasonable!

that lil guy is soo cute! My dogs were adopted a year apart (pointer/bull terrier female mix and lab/shepard male mix) and now they are the best of friends. My daughter even brought home kittens recently, and after a little adjustment, they all get along fine. I catch them cuddling together all the time on the couch. Hopefully with a little time everything will be smooth! Good luck
