TheUtter Garbage One must go through to find a job and the Demise of the AmericanDream

Part1- The Garbage, thanks college…

Tobe brief and to go for pure shock value I will start out this piece with abulleted list which will then be repeated later on. Here I present the “PostCollege life of a majority of Young adults”

· Student follows his dream, he knowsmajoring in X as opposed to Y is probably a better option but heck he was toldcollege is about pursuing what you love not exactly what is most marketable. And he is assured since middle school and high school that regardless of degreehe will find that middle class job because graduating college is the key to themiddle class lifestyle

· Graduate with a degree in Y, he appliesto his dream job position but he knows it is tough and so in addition heapplies to more practical and realistic positions as well (i.e… entry leveloffice work, clerical, data entry, administrative)

· Does not get any bites in regards to thedream jobs, starts to worry a bit, yet not full panic mode yet because he believesthat he can land that entry level office job

· The entry level office job never getsback to him of if they do it is always a rejection. He finds out that the entrylevel office job wants 2-3 years of previous experience and would stronglyprefer to hire certain majors over his “worthless LA degree”

· Slowly and horrifyingly realizes thatthe retail job he had in high school, whilst still in college, he realizes thathe must now apply to that job again

· Slowly and horrifyingly comes to termswith the damnation that is “I am making 10$ an hour, my student loan is 15k, Iam making 10$ an hour and my student loan is 15k, I am making 10$ an hour, can Ieven afford an apartment and all the bills that come with living on your own?My god will I be with my parents forever?”

· Next step- I don’t know, I am sure itsucks, I have not gotten there yet, I will update once I do and at times Ialmost feel like praying for death

I want to explain tothose who will listen, to those who can sympathize, to those in the samesituation- finding a job sucks, the process utterly, utterly sucks and all theadvice that worked back in the day of your parents, your cousin, older brother/sisterwho graduated pre- 2008, yea all that advice is useless.

Letme guess you were told: “Go in person, wear a nice suit, ask to speak to HR orthe hiring manger”- yea well sorry HR tells you to “apply online” and the hiringmanager is “mysteriously never in”. Let me guess you were told: “You got tostart out small, apply for the entry level jobs, the internships then work yourway up”- well sorry the entry level job wants 2-3 years of experience AND a specificdegree. And internships the almighty internships, well we are now in a worldwhere paid or unpaid, landing an internship is no longer guaranteed.

Let me repeat the partabout the entry level jobs and let me blind your screen by typing it in all capsfor I want to make this part absolutely clear: THE ENTRY LEVEL JOBS WANT 2-3YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND A SPECIFIC DEGREE. Don’t have that experience because heyyou are looking to gain that first experience and rationally you thought “Iknow I will apply for that entry level position”, I do apologize, rationalityno longer applies. Did not graduate with that Accounting degree, Financedegree, Engineering degree, Computer Science or Nursing degree- you wentliberal arts instead- good luck, truly from the bottom of my heart I wish theeluck for your degree is generally seen as useless in the eyes of the employer.

Let me guess yourEnglish Professor, your History advisor, the lady who works in Career services, let me guess they assured you that your Anthropology degree, your Englishdegree would be applicable and easily transferable to the professional worldbecause you have gained “ great writing and communication skills and you areglobal citizen of the world etc…”. Yea well what they neglected to tell you, intentionalor not I am not sure, what they neglected to tell you is the days of graduatewith any degree-apply to entry level job even if your degree is not an exactfit because the employer is willing to train-those days are no more. Let merepeat in caps again “THE ENTRY LEVEL JOBS WANT 2-3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND ASPECIFIC DEGREE”. So I am sorry but the employer is no longer willing to takethe Social work grad and train him for the Accounting Clerk job, that entrylevel IT position- sorry there going to take the Comp-Sci major over theEnglish grad, that entry level analyst position at Ernst and Young- sorry theyare going to take the Finance or Business major over the liberal arts major. Thebottom line is, the advisors, the professors, the career services are so outtouch with the real world that I have to believe they are either malice filled screwsor are actually that dumb when it comes to finding work, giving good advice forthe student that did not graduate with the “in-demand degree”.

But wait let me guessyou know examples of people who graduated with the “useless LA degree” and wasable to find meaningful work. First let me ask:

· Did he/she graduate from a “Better knownschool”?

· Did he/she have a friend, family member orknow someone on the inside?

· Was he/she actually able to land aninternship? (which as I stated earlier is next to impossible)

· Did he/she combo the “useless LA degree”with an in-demand degree?

· How long ago did your friend graduate?

If that person you know did not fall into any of thefour categories, then truly your friend is the exception, your friend is theneedle in the haystack, your friend is the camel passing through the eye of theneedle, and more importantly and perhaps most depressing of all your friend isthe exception to the rule. Ultimately the truth of the matter is too manyemployers your LA degree is seen as worthless and the employer is thinking “Whyshould I hire or heck even grant you an interview when I can interview and hiresomeone who graduated with an in-demand degree?” That is the truth, that is perceptionof our liberal arts degree- we are truly the 2nd class citizens ofthe post college world and what chance does the 2nd class haveagainst those who graduated with the in-demand degree?

Welllet me get to the point of this long winded and I hope entertaining rant andlet me do in bulleted points so that you may have more time to get back to thejob hunt.
