Throwing

Posted 02-14-2016 at 12:00 AM by aliasfinn

I was told I could throw with deadly accuracy from my crib but I don't remember those days. I do remember throwing a hell of a lot when I was a kid. Footballs, baseballs, rocks, apples off the tree in our back yard and in the winter when everyone else would go sleigh riding I would try to pick them off with snowballs. I once threw our house key into the lock on the door from about 6 feet away. I saw that done in an old movie when this gangster did it and I just had to see if I could. I set a small stool outside and with my brother watching, threw about 50 to 100 times until the key finally went in. The old man noticed all the scratches on the lock and thought someone had tried to break in. That was over 40 years ago and my brother still talks about it. He told his kids but I don't think they believe it. Once in a Laundromat while I was waiting for my clothes to dry, I stood back about 5 feet from the soda machine and flipped a quarter into the coin slot. That took me about 30 attempts. They used to have this carnival at this park every summer and I would skip all the rides and go straight to where they had the booths where you would throw for prizes. One booth had balloons and a 10 dollar bill tacked to a board about 10 feet back. They gave you 3 darts for a quarter and if you hit 3 balloons you won stuffed animals or other cheapie carnival prizes but if you hit the president on the 10 dollar bill in the face you got 10 bucks. After I won $30 they changed the rule and you had to hit him in the eye. I did that twice before they banned me from playing that game. I just stood around and watched other people throwing darts until a man who worked at the carnival came up and asked if I would like to work some of the booths. I was told to show the people that it wasn't impossible to win. A couple of them were basically impossible. There was one where you could win $100 if you could throw a 1 inch steel ball bearing through a hole in this sheet of plywood. The hole wasn't much bigger than the ball bearing but unknown to the people it was drilled on a slight upward angle and unless you were 2 feet tall you could never get the right trajectory to get the ball through. I tried it myself when no one was around and that's when I discovered it was rigged. I have won a few dart tournaments but that got kind of boring and I spent most of my time entertaining friends with throwing exhibitions. We would hang bottles from tree limbs and I would bust them with rocks as they were swinging. I still throw darts occasionally but all the other stuff are just memories now.
