To start kids in school prior to move or not???

Posted 08-04-2016 at 11:56 AM by imirab

Here is some input from my recent experience of moving from SC to Atlanta with a rising 9th grader.

Our home was listed last fall with the hopes of selling it quickly. The stress of selling a home and relocating ( especially for you with many children) is stress enough. As the weeks went by and my house was not sold, I kept regrouping every few weeks with a plan of "if the house sells, what is the best time to get to Atlanta school wise ( and work wise)". If my son had to jump into school immediately upon moving, so be it. I was told by other adults who experienced this that it is a good thing. Your child will get extra attention as the new kid and if you do your homework ahead of time, you can consult with the school counselors and have them on board to help your children adjust and have peers in the school show your children around to help them feel more comfortable. Our house did not sell for a while. A buyer came along, and although I would have liked to take advantage of a move date in December during the break, the buyers caused us a big delay and we were not able to move until early March.
My son continued his eighth grade year in his SC school ( having also told his friends goodbye several times!) and just laughed it off that we were waiting for our house to go through the selling process. When we finally moved in the first week of March,2016, I "threw" my son into school 3 days from our move in date ( having talked to the counselors via phone and teachers online). He had a perfect transition with support from all ends... the teachers and kids could not have been more welcoming and he has thrived with this move from day one. He finished out his remaining eight weeks of eighth grade in Atlanta and has now started his Freshman year on a "high", knowing the kids already. Your kids will thrive too as long as you explain to them how well it will all work out, and kids change cities and schools all the time. I think the consistency of keeping their normal routine as much as possible during the listing and sale of your home is important and helps to keep the stress down while you are making plans to move. Hope this helps and lots of luck selling your home and having an easy move!

Due to a few setbacks with the sale of our home it looks like it's going to be mid Sept by the time we are out there. My dilemma is this...do I start my kids in school here in Indiana (which starts next week and we are totally unprepared, mentally and school supplies etc) to only yang them out a month in or hold off and risk starting them late out in California? One is starting Kindergarten, 1st grade, 6th and 9th grade...Of course the kids have been told for quite some time that we would be moving prior to school starting here so they have said goodbye to their friends and are not prepared to start school next week! I just don't know what to do! The other option would be taking a financial hit and taking the kids out there prior to closing on our house (temporary rental) so they can start school out there. Thoughts please!!
