Phase Two of "How do I listen to music"

Posted 02-01-2017 at 01:10 AM by TamaraSavannah

This discussion got me to look at what was available out there on CD with the thought in mind of "Just Buy It" vs the time and energy to go through the conversion process with LPs or, GASP!, cassettes.

26 CDs for around $129 (CD and S&H together) but you know, going after one's fav artists is rather interesting. That's a lot of Laura Branigan, HEART, Stevie Nicks, 3 Cher, Rumors, and Touch Me by Samantha Fox.

So then I looked at a few other favs and decided those called for the conversion process. Pat Benatar as in "Get Nervous" for $10? Herb Alpert at an average of $3.50? Brasil '66 "Fool on the Hill" for $15? The 5th Dimension averaging around $10?

Perhaps not that much when looked at singularly but when you get spoiled at prices of pennies, it is somewhat of a shock.

A lot of the CDs I bought on Tuesday came with the option to AutoRip in mp3. I might take Amazon up on that option but there are a number of things in 2 or 3 ways to consider.

FIRST of all, when I was at dance workshops last weekend, they re-introduced me to Goldwave (I think I had used the shareware version when I did "Singing for the stage") and the difference between WAV and MP3. While WAV is memory intensive, does it really mean that much if it is being stored off computer hard drives when hard drives are cheap? If one is playing it off a personal device, it probably does mean a lot, but as said, I don't play my music like that.

Secondly, when I am on a long trip and am playing music in the car, there is the marking of the passage of time by how many tapes/CDs are played. That is, go through an album and without realizing it much, another hour has gone by. I'm not sure if that psychological effect is obtained when there is just one massive storage playing.

Third, there are reception issues when it is not off memory in hand but rather from streaming. This might change my approach to music videos.

One of my "how to make a film" profs once commented that he hated music videos because it took away letting the imagination create a vast performance based on what is heard. In at least an example or two, it may go a step further and destroy the enjoyment of the song.

SHeDaisy's "Lucky for You" was a great song for me to listen to but once I saw THAT VIDEO, I was DISGUSTED! It takes a lot of mental effort not to see that video when I hear that song and often, the best I can achieve is just blurring. Branigan's "The Lucky One" where the video is no where as powerful as the song, Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" where the shots of fans jumping around like idiots destroy the song, and so forth.

Deriving my music from just CD's as oppose to youtube will probably be a great blessing for me.

Finally, today I had to wait around the house for the line man to put in my landlines, so I went through a lot of CDs. Dion, Cher, Sara Evans, Batman Forever. When I ordered my CDs yesterday, I did so off the memory of cassette covers. So one of the Cher's ordered I found I had in CD already, bought at $2 out of 1/2 Price. Sigh.....occupational risk when it is so easy, so cheap to buy.
