Cool History in North Port Florida
A little bit of history for our local residents. Did you know that here, in our bustling little town of North Port, we have a historical landmark that continues to educate researchers about the people and animals that inhabited this area as long as 5000 years ago.
Little Salt Spring resulted from a sinkhole which occured thousands of years ago... it is 200 feet deep and it contains human remains of 100's of Indians that used the land as a burial ground. The salt content of the water has perfectly preserved these remains to the point that some of them still contain brain matter. Although they are nearly 5000 years old.

" There are hundreds of archaic Indian graves where human remains have rested for over 5000 years. The water table rose shortly after people were buried by the lake’s edge, resulting in excellent preservation–some skulls still have brain matter inside.
Scientists have identified the bones of mastodon, Jefferson’s ground sloth, saber-tooth, rabbit, wood stork, giant tortoise, gopher tortoise, Florida cooter, red-bellied turtle, an extinct species of box turtle, diamondback rattlesnake, and largemouth bass from Little Salt Spring. Although we are not allowed to venture back there as it is an ongoing research project..... you can google videos of drone videos and youtube videos on the area.
