Hurricane Prep

Posted 09-12-2018 at 02:03 PM by Bayouliving

With the storm heading toward the East Coast, I am reminded that we could be next here on the Gulf Coast. As a life long resident of this area, I have survived many hurricanes. The worst, by far, for my family was Ivan in 2004. Our home was destroyed and we lost so much. I learned
many lessons from that storm. We had taken all precautions and boarded up all windows and doors. The plywood was simply cut. It looked like someone had taken a saw and cut it in half! When we returned there were entire rooms that were emptied, furniture, rugs, pictures on the wall -- it was just gone. I had evacuated and taken all my important documents, pictures, special keepsakes and I had video recorded the house, inside and out before leaving. What I didn't think to do was video the inside of drawers, cabinets and closets. You will forget what's in there when making insurance claims. It's very hard to remember everything. It look us 14 months to get an insurance settlement and re-build the house. We had flood insurance as well as homeowner's insurance. We ended up hiring a private adjuster to help us on our claim. Even though it seemed very expensive to do that, it is well worth it. The adjusters are educated in what to ask for and how to ask for it. The wind company wants to make the flood company pay and vice versa so there is a battle. The adjuster remembered to ask for reimbursement for things that had not occurred to us. I hope no one needs to know this kind of information this year, but just in case, here it is! Pass it along to anyone you know in the path of Hurricane Florence along with a prayer for their safety and recovery.
