St. Pete - Worth it to buy in more expensive/happening areas like Crescent Lake/Old NE/Coffee Pot?

My SO and I will be in Tampa for business late April. We are going to stay after for a few days. I have been looking at Gulfport for the future but I am concerned about the impact of red tide.
