Those 1930/40 movies were written/produced when the US was in the Great Depression or WWII. They tend to be overly optimistic (Fred Astaire) or emphasize grittiness (Double Indemnity). So many movies now (like Netflix's) focus on the weirdness as a novelty or on world conflict. I find both to be unpleasant and not good for our society.
I agree. The movies of the 1930s and 1940s were pretty much unrealistic. No one lived, or danced, like Fred and Ginger in their fantastically elaborate sets but people went to the movies to escape real life for a little while. Movies today emphasize gratuitous violence and action over plot. I think it's highly unpleasant because, in my opinion, society is now considering violence to be the norm, not the exception.
