moving to san diego. Good schools and areas to buy a home

We are moving to San Diego area next year. We are looking for affordable home to buy but good schools is another issue for us. My husband is a piperfitter and will be looking for work. Would like to keep his commute time down to an hour. Are daughter is 9 years old and will be in 3rd grade in august 2010. She makes friends easily and loves to ride her bike outside. Are max for spending on a home is 300k. Sorry this is what we can afford. Any advice would be great. Neighbors in san diego or outside of the city.
