New High Schools and Stadium for Mount Pleasant and Awendaw
Major Investments For Mount Pleasant and Awendaw
Charleston County is finally taking action to help Mount Pleasant address its overcrowded schools. Recently cited as the fastest growing municipality east of the Mississippi and the 10th fastest growing in the nation, the Town of Mount Pleasant has been in dire need of support from Charleston County Schools to handle the massive growth of the student population here. This is especially needed to remedy overcrowding at it's only high school, Wando, which has been operating way past it's original intended capacity for years now with a current student population over 4,000. The present situation was exacerbated when Charleston County decided to close Lincoln High in McClellanville just before the start of the 2016 school year forcing Wando to absorb hundreds of more students.
The county has been moving forward with construction of Lucy Beckham High School and has just announced the purchase of 184 acres of land off Doar Road for a new school in the Town of Awendaw. CCSD is finalizing the new purchases with funds derived from the sale of school property once occupied by the old Laing Middle School on Six Mile Road.
New Stadium Will Be A Win for Mount Pleasant
One significant piece of news for the area was also announced - the construction of a $14 million dollar, 6,000 seat stadium which will be built over the next year on property currently within the master planned area of Carolina Park. The stadium will serve as the home field for football, lacrosse and soccer teams from Wando High, Lucy Beckham High and Awendaw High School. It is envisioned that the stadium will also be used to host other events, making it an important new venue for area residents and their families.
From the Moultrie News:

The school will be designed for 1500 students and is estimated to cost $6.4 million. 184 acre site on Doar Road, next to Town Hall
With the closure of Lincoln High School and long-distance bussing of Awendaw & McClellanville students to Wando, the news of a third high school for the area was a welcome piece of news for everyone. While the purchase of the land is still being finalized, it appears that the school is slated to be built some time in the next few years on a 184 acre tract off Doar Road, just across from Awendaw's Town Hall. With so much growth moving north of Mount Pleasant along highway 17, it was ideal for the County to have sold some of it's Mount Pleasant real estate in the midst of such a strong real estate market in order to pay for the new school.

From the Moultrie News:
Kate Darby, CCSD board chair said, "CCSD and the board is really excited about these opportunities that we have in Mount Pleasant and Awendaw. The purchase of 184 acres on Doar Road for the future middle and high school will really meet the needs of that area and selling the former Laing site is a win-win for everybody. The Carolina Park purchase for the East Cooper stadium again is a win-win for the district but also the community. It will be a real asset to the area."
After closing Lincoln High School and merging that student population with Wando High School the board made a commitment to construct a middle and high school that students in that community could more easily access. Lincoln High School was shuttered because it was not financially feasible or responsible to continue to operate it. "The board made the decision to close Lincoln and move those students to Wando, but as a part of that we did agree to find property in Awendaw for District I students. District I and II constituent boards have started discussions on how to work together," said Darby.
From a capacity standpoint, Darby thinks the middle school will be constructed first. "The Awendaw land purchase contract postures the district's health for the future as we plan out for growth in the East Cooper area," said Borowy. "This is a new opportunity to create a new educational environment for the future in that area. The new schools will be located halfway between Wando and the old Lincoln and support the needs of both communities."
