    I grew up in Southwestern Virginia "The Mountain Empire." I like your description of the people of the area but I think you over emphasize the hardships . The agricultural work was indeed a hard life for many as was the life of a coal miner, but I think there have been a lot of changes since I left the area many years ago. I do feel that there are still less opportunities there, but one can certainly make a living without great hardship. I go back for a visit from time to time; the beauty of the countryside and mountains still lifts me up.
