At the beginning of the year the Admin of this board started this thread soliciting ideas for new general forums: https://www.city-data.com/forum/about...al-forums.html

I'm wondering if you guys have any plans to do something like that for new features also. I see people comment and I have a short current wish list myself. Any plans to start a thread like that to corral ideas and see if any of them might be feasible?

Well, it looks like you just started one.

The problem with such thread might be that people don't know how the software works and a lot of suggestions could be impractical, if not impossible to implement. I'm guilty of a few such ideas myself, since I'm not a techie.

But, it may be interesting so please, give us your list. I'm sure Admin will read it but I wouldn't expect a lot of answers from us here. Though we will most certainly discuss anything that might be worth a try.

One thing I've often wished for would be a required field for "Location."

In other words, you'd have to write something in the location field when registering. People could write whatever they want, of course, but I think a good number would write the name of a city or other geographic area and then probably not change it as time went along.

I get it that the people who post in the General Forums sometimes prefer a bit of anonymity, but they would be free to change their location to a ambiguous remark if they wished.

For those of us who post in the city forums, it would be very helpful to know where a person is coming from when they make certain observations. For example, say someone from out of town makes a comment that is no longer true. Instead of fighting with him you can see that he's from out of town and simply explain that things may have changed since he was in the city.

Or say someone complains that it's way too snowy in a certain city. If you can see he is from Arizona, you can understand where he's coming from. If you see he's from Minneapolis, that might call for a different response. If you see he's from a city you know personally, you could make comparisons. Etc.

I'm wondering what a required field for "Location" would require? Where I live now? Where I have lived in the past? How long would I have to live somewhere to qualify to list my location? I currently live in New Mexico but spent a lot of time in Loudoun County, VA, your listed location... I don't know everything about the area, worked in Sterling on and off for about five years. We flre our plane down to Leesburg many times for recreation and had some good friends just Southeast of Harpers Ferry... I lived in some small towns which I don't want to list, but I will tell you I lived in Miami...

I encounter real people, face to face, almost once a week who don't know a lot about the area they live in. And yes, some people start fights because "You don't live here, you don't know"

We have a location listed for registered users already. I try to ignore that field as much as possible.

Sorry for dragging that out...

Cool beans - ok here goes - and, I realize lots of suggestions just won't be feasible, but it's possible that one or two will be both brilliant and doable I'll try to categorize them in case that helps with reviewing types of suggestions...

1. Links - this might even help reduce spam - you know how when you quote someone you have to write something first in order to post? Well, how about programming so you have to write something in order to post a link? I'm thinking in particular about OPs who start threads with just a link and no comment but it could apply to any post in a thread. Link only thread starters could be spam, or linked to a bad site, and are annoying because they're so lazy - if you want to start a thread about something, at least explain why you're linking and a little about what's included in the link.

2. Friend/Ignore - I'd love a way, besides the ignore list, to mark other users as non-friends. It'd be extra cool if we could make a note to ourselves as to why! Some users are trouble makers in general, or someone who expresses especially abhorrent views (IMO), or with whom I got into a verbal altercation, or who posts questions and gets mad at just about everyone who tries to help. These aren't people I want to ignore forever - I still want to be able to see their posts in the flow of a thread and even interact with them when they aren't being jerks (which I'd hope would be most of the time) - but I'd like some indication that this is someone I've dealt with before and marked with a red flag for whatever reason. The 'whatever reason' is where it'd be uber cool to be able to write a brief reminder as to why they were flagged - visible only to the individual user.

3. Reps - We can see the comments on reps that were given to us - as well as the post that was repped and what day/time the rep was received. My wish list item is to have a similar list of the reps we've given to others, including the comment, screen name, post, day/time.

And before Dark comes in here with her pencil suggestion I know I could make a list on paper or excel but we're talking programming wish list

I'd leave it up to the poster to decide what to write there. The only requirement I'd have is that the field should be filled in. I do find that when people write something, no matter what it is, it tends to give me a better sense of how to communicate with them.

I totally agree that people often know a lot about many cities. I have Loudoun County, VA listed as mine, but post regularly on several forums, including the Pittsburgh forum, Hampton Roads, and the Los Angeles forum. I feel I know these cities well enough to have information to share--at the same time it's good for the other readers to see that although I may know what I'm talking about, I may not live there at the moment so they might want to ask how I know this information.

This would be so great! May I suggest a certain word limit, too. Like maybe they have to write at least 15 words so you avoid the game of simply saying "Read This." Well, you avoid it somewhat.

Please don't elaborate on how my location informed you how to communicate with me!

I really like Toosie's idea about being able to view reps given and the one about links.

Great idea, I would love to have this feature!
