What is your view on Madagascar/Malagasy people...?
This is kind of a play on the Ethiopia/Ethiopian thread...
But, i think very few of us have actually been to Madagascar, and even in our own countries, I can't recall even meeting someone from there...Malagasy people....I don't even know where they might emigrate to? (France, perhaps? I just don't know?)
Anyways, let's get a thread going much like the Ethiopia/Ethiopian one, but one for Madagascar/Malagasy people...
I didn't see the Ethiopia one. Madagascar has beautiful music!! The language is in the Austronesian family; the Malagasy people are the westernmost of the Austronesian peoples, who mostly are in east Asia/SE Asia, and the Pacific. There are also people from Africa, India, and elsewhere; it's a multi-ethnic society.
It's too bad the country --or rather, the people--are so poor. Madagascar has many natural resources, and is a source of rare and precious gems. If the economy were well-managed, I would think people would have a better standard of living.

I was equally impressed by the music in Mauritius & Reunion. Definitely an underrated region of the world for music...

There's a popular Afrobeat group based in Canada, that tours the US from time to time (they just had a tour last fall/winter), and there are jazz clubs around the Bay Area that invite them to perform more regularly: African Guitar Summit, they're called, and they include Malagasy music in their repertoire, as one of the musicians is from Madagascar. Check out their two discs by the same name. There are many discs of Malagasy music available.
