I watched a few videos about crime in Johannesburg, South Africa; however, most of the people speaking about crime were European, and not Native South Africans.

I'm an American of African descent and presently planning a trip to South Africa. Based on my research thus far, I have yet to come across Americans of African descent harping on the crime. If anything, most Americans of African descent who visit South Africa, particularly Johannesburg, tend to prefer life there, over the U.S.

I would love to receive feedback from Americans of African descent who presently reside in South Africa (or who have visited often).

Is the crime overblown or is it primarily Europeans who are targetted and not really Americans of African descent?

I have numerous black friends who have traveled to South Africa. They all talk about the issue of crime there.

I cannot tell you specifically about SA, but I can tell you about some other parts of Africa where black people from the US and Europe are not very popular. I cannot explain why because I do not really know why it is the case. Don't be surprised if you are somehow singled out for rude behavior--which is what I have seen before in Africa. Places I saw this had very low crime rates, so I have no idea if this "rudeness" might translate into crime against you in SA.

I've traveled throughout Ghana, Senegal and Gambia (West Africa) and haven't experienced this at all. If anything, the people were beyond kind and overextended themselves, especially once they knew I was African American. Most greeted me with "welcome home."

A number of Africans are actually now creating social media content to bridge the gap. The below videos are from one of my favorite African content creators:

He is very forthright in telling Black Americans, Black Europeans, Black Caribbeans, Black Canadians, and Black Australians that the African continent is our true home.

It is interesting because when I do research on this topic, I'm seeing a lot of positive content being pushed forth from African Americans about South Africa. I will be visiting and seeing what it's like first hand, but I was just curious about this issue, since so many Black Americans are raving about Johannesburg, but rarely do content on the crime etc..

Here is one of the few videos where an African American mentioned being robbed. But even so, she still mentioned her love of South Africa:

South Africa averages around 60 murders per day. The US averages around 44 a day. These are from the 2019 numbers.

While that doesn't seem so far off, let's keep in mind that the US has 330 million people, while South Africa has 60 million people. If the US was to have comparable murder numbers adjusted for population, we would be seeing over 240 murders a day.

Granted, I don't want to blow things out of proportion. And, indeed, even with those numbers, the odds of you being a victim of murder in South Africa are low. But the crime rate does go into a feeling of safety and security. I will add that murder isn't the only issue with crime in South Africa; there are over 55,000 reported sex offenses in South Africa each year, too, which represents an uncomfortably high rate: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-afric...ders%20a%20day.

I imagine that a lot of the crime is primarily concentrated in areas that have very little opportunity (just like in certain rural and inner-city areas throughout the U.S. and in other nations).

Years ago, when I was in college, I worked as a counselor for my college campuses' sexual assault hotline. What was very striking was, though we would receive a lot of calls, hardly any women on campus ever filed any official charges against the alleged assailants. I'm pointing this out because sometimes we like to pretend that sex crimes in the U.S. are much lower than in other nations when in truth, many women in the U.S. who are sexually assaulted/raped never actually file official charges.

I think a lot of it is, but I'd wager that it snakes out into other areas, too, due to crimes of opportunity (you'll commit certain crimes like robbery against those areas that have plenty of opportunity and material goods). There are numerous videos on how the better to do live in South Africa, complete with their living behind gated communities patrolled by armed guards.

I am very curious whether the bolded text primarily applies to middle/upper-income white Europeans who reside in South Africa.

Again, I don't see content from middle/upper-income African Americans about the crime in Johannesburg. Nor are they advocating for others to live in isolation behind gated communities or walking around with patrolled armed guards.

Honestly, the videos from African Americans vs white Europeans are totally different. The former generally speaks highly about South Africa (at least with respect to the content shared online), while (in most instances) the latter does not.

The truth is more than likely somewhere in between.

The only videos on what you highlighted that I’ve seen have been from black South Africans. Granted, the better to do but still.
